Step 1 The introduction to the text

  What’s the Chinese meaning of the proverb “Do as the Romans do”? 入乡随俗。So when we’re in foreign countries, we should follow their customs. It’s necessary for us to know a lot about different customs in the world. In China, people have meals with chopsticks, while in the west people eat with knives and forks. In many countries people should keep quiet while eating, but in Japan people should make a noise to show they like them while eating noodles. In France people are supposed to keep bread on the table.

(1)v. 摆动;摇动;抖动;颤动(注意它的过去式和过去分词的拼写:shook, shaken)

Chinese should shake hands when they meet.

Shaking one’s head means disagreement.

I felt the house shaking when the earthquake came.

The poor girl is shaking with cold.

The plane landed safely.

The pilot succeeded in landing the plane at the airport in the heavy rain.

4.custom n. 习俗;风俗;习惯

It’s the custom for Chinese people to offer tea with both hands.

5.wipe v. 擦;抹

After washing the dishes Jane often wipes hands on a dry towel.

Please wipe tears with a napkin. Don’t be so sad.

Jane wiped the dirt from the desk just now.

Use the napkin to wipe off the sweat.

6.stick

(1)v. 粘;戳;插

He stuck his favorite picture on the wall of the bedroom.

Tommy stuck a nail into the balloon.

It’s rude to stick chopsticks into food in China.

拓展:stick to doing 坚持做……

If you stick to using this method, your English will be better.

(2)n. 棍子;棒子

The short sticks are used to make fire.

Please pass the stick to next runner.

(1)v 指;指向

Jane pointed her finger in this direction.

由point构成的短语有:

① point at指,指近处的物或者人。

② point to指远处的物或者人。

It’s rude to point at others with your finger.

He pointed to the mountain far away, saying, “The trees were planted by me.”

拓展:point out 指出

(2)n. 小数点;观点

8.full adj. 吃饱的;满的

Running on a full stomach is bad for you.

I’d like a full bottle of juice.

It’s impolite to speak with your mouth full.

拓展:be full of 充满的;装满的,同义短语是be filled with。

The room is full of smoke.

Jenny is full of herself.

Teenagers are supposed to concentrate more on studies.

It is supposed to be hot in summer in Wuhan.

2.drop by 顺便来访,同义短语是come over to。

On the way to work he dropped by my home.

Please drop by sometime next week.

3.after all 毕竟;终究;究竟

Don’t get angry with Helen. She is a kid after all.

Mr. Li wasn’t offered a job in the city after all.

4.pick up 捡起、拾起;搭载;用交通工具接某人;拿起

The girl picked the waste paper up on the floor.

The plane can pick up two hundred passengers.

I’ll pick you up at the gate of our school.

He came into the room and picked up the phone.

5.make noise 发出响声

It’s rude to make noise while eating in China.

Don’t make so much noise at the meeting.

6.get/be used to 习惯于

She is used to the quiet life in the countryside.

They are used to riding a bike to school.

注意:该词组中的to是介词,后面要接doing。

 

.key sentences

1.You should have asked what you were supposed to wear.

你本应该问问你该穿什么。

Q:句中的have asked能否换成ask呢?

A:不能。因为should/could have+done (过去分词) 表示本应该做某事而实际没有做。

I should have taken an umbrella with me today.

You should have gotten up early this morning.

2.Where I am from, we’re pretty relaxed about time.

在我生活的国家里,人们对时间很随意。

Q:where引导的是什么从句,是定语从句吗?

A:地点状语从句。如果在where前面加上In the place/country,那么就是一个定语从句。因为定语从句必须修饰名词或者代词。

We should go camping where the air is fresh.

Put the books where they were.

 

.Grammar:宾语从句(Ⅲ) 在使用宾语从句时的注意事项。

一.有部分动词后面常不接that引导的宾语从句:wonder (want to know), ask, explain等。

I wonder when the plane will land.

She didn’t explain why she was late for the meeting.

The police asked what the thief looked like.

二.宾语从句的附加疑问句

I think/believe/suppose/consider/expect/guess引导的宾语从句,在变成反意疑问句时,附加疑问部分要和从句的主谓保持一致。其他的宾语从句,附加疑问部分要和主句的主谓保持一致。

I think the movie is boring, isn’t it?

I don't think the movie is boring, is it?

I believe Tommy will come to our party, won’t he?

Jim guessed his mother had gone to Japan, didn’t he?
