1. base n. 基部，基地，基础v.以……为基础 / 根据

I like the latter book.

5. command n. & v. 命令；指令；掌握
Begin when I give the command.

He commanded the men to shut the gates.
He commanded that the men should shut the gates.
He commands a large vocabulary.

6. request n. 请求；要求
They made a request for further aid.
The staff immediately made a request that he (should) reconsider his decision.
He requested a loan from the bank.
You are requested not to smoke in the restaurant.
She requested that no one should be told of her decision.
request sth. (from sb.)
request sb. to do sth. →be requested to do sth.
request that sb. should do sth.
7. recognize vt. 辨认出；承认，公认
e.g.I recognized him as soon as he came in the room.
recognize…as…
Drugs were not recognized as a problem then.
The book now is recognized as a classic.(经典著作)
8. straight adj. 直的，笔直的，adv.直接地，挺直地
a straight line
long straight hair 又直又长的头发
Keep straight on for two miles. 一直向前走两英里。
He was too tired to walk straight.
Come straight home after school.
9. because of (sth./doing sth.)
They are here because of us.
He walked slowly because of his bad leg.
Because of his wife’s being there, I didn’t say anything about it.

10. come up 走近，上来；提出
While we were talking, a man came up.
We saw a big black bear coming up on us from the woods.
The question hasn’t come up yet.
come up with 提出，想出
Scientists will have to come up with new methods of increasing the world’s food supply.
11. at present 目前，现在
So that is how the matter stands at present.
be present (at…) 出席，在场
How many people were present at the meeting?
He was pleased at seeing so many people present.
present 现在的
Here is the doctor’s present address.
12．make use of 利用
make good / full use of…
We should train them to make full use of reference books.
She wondered what use he would make of his opportunity.
In my opinion it’s the best use that could be made of this money.
