1.impression n. 印象,感想,日记

My first impression of him was favourable.

2.constant adj. 时常发生的,连续不断的

4.guide n. 指导,向导,导游v. 指引,指导

5.tolerate v. 容忍,忍受

I don’t know how you tolerate that noise.

There is a limit to what one person can tolerate.

We simply cannot tolerate cheating in exams.

 

6.lack v. 缺乏,没有  n. 缺乏,短缺的东西

The trip was cancelled through lack of interest.

He did not enter university because of lack of money.

He lacks confidence.

She has the determination that her brother lacks.

 

7.fasten v. 系牢,扎牢,扣紧

Fasten your seatbelts, please.

She fastened the notice to the board.

 

8.optimistic adj. 乐观(主义)的

We are now taking an optimistic view.

I think you’re being a little over-optimistic.

She’s not very optimistic about the outcome of the tacks.

 

9.instant n. 瞬间,片刻 adj. 立即的,立刻的

I’ll be back in an instant.

Just for an instant I thought he was going to refuse.

The show was an instant success.

Jane burst into tears the instant she came in.

 

10.swallow v. 吞下,咽下

Always chew food well before swallowing it.

The pills should be swallowed whole.

The plane was swallowed up by the clouds.(吞没)

 

 

11.take up 接受,开始,继续;拿起

I’d like to take up the point you raised earlier.

She took up the story where Tim had left off.

She took up his offer of a drink.

John took up acting while he was at college.

 

12.lose sight of 看不见

catch sight of

at first sight 乍一看,初看时

I saw her for a moment but then lost sight of her in the crowd.

 

13.slide into 移动,溜进

He slid into bed.

She slid out while no one was looking.

The man slid the money quickly into his pocket.

 

14.speed up 加速

The train soon speeded up.
