1.abuse n & vt. 滥用;虐待(use sth. such as power or authority for the wrong; treat sb./sth. badly)

You abuse my trust ,so I will not trust you .

Don’t abuse the cat.

Abusing the animals is lawbreaking.

 

2.Stress n .v. 压力、重音、强调

e.g.①under stress 处于压力,不能放松的状态

②lay stress on…

e.g.You always lay stress on the habit of study.

③What does the article stress?

④You are stressed; The exam is stressful.

 

3.ban vt. 禁止;取缔 —banned —banning

n. 禁令;谴责 (say that sth. must not be seen /done)

Smoking is banned in the building

Smoking is banned in the room.

ban sb. from doing  禁止某人做某事

She has been banned from driving for a year

她被禁止驾车一年了

a banned book  禁书

a banned film  禁止上映的电影

 

4.due adj. 欠款的;预定的;到期的

due to 由于……

be dueto be expected to happen or arrive at a particular time.

e.g.When is your baby due? 你的预产期是什么时候。

Your baby is due on June 1st.

The flight from Boston is due at five o’clock.

从波士顿的航班应于8:00到达。

The bus is due any minute now.

公共汽车随时都可能到。

The meeting is due to start until 3 o’clock.

会议预定要到3点钟才开始。(预定要做某事)

You’re due three weeks holiday this year.

=You should be given.

欠你的三个星期的假。(今年你应该有三个星期的假期。)

5.tough adj. 困难的;强硬的

(not easily broken or made weaker)

He asked me a lot of tough questions.

He is as tough as nails

他很能吃苦耐劳非常坚强。

The meat was tough and hard to chew.

(这肉太硬)很难咬动。

 

6.addicted adj. 入迷的;上瘾的(not used before n.)

addicted to 对……有瘾 (like to do sth. so much that you don’t want to stop)

He is addicted to drugs

He is addicted to computer games.

7.accustom vt. 使习惯于 (make sb. become used to sth.)

accustomed adj. 惯常的;习惯了的

be accustomed to doing/get/become accustomed to doing

=get/be used to doing

accustom sb. to sth. 使某人习惯于……

His eyes quickly become accustomed to the dark.

 

8.withdrawal n. 收回,撤退,戒毒 (或脱瘾过程)

the withdraw of forces 军队撤出

German’s withdrawal from the talks. 德国退出谈判。

 

9.automatic adj. 自动的,无意识的

an automatic time switch  自动的定时开关

“of course”, I replied automatically. 不加思索

 

10.mental adj. 精神的;智力的

mentally adv. 精神上;智力的

mental health 心理健康

mental patients 精神病人

go mental (B.E )=be angry 行为失常;有病

 

11.quit quit/quitting vi & vt.

(leave a job/ school etc. especially because you are annoyed or unhappy.)

Her husband had to quit because of ill heath.

她丈夫身体不好,不得不辞去了工作。

 

12.effect n. 结果 cause and effect 因果

 

13.unfit adj.

 

14.strengthen:vt. 加强;巩固;使坚强

become stronger/ make sth stronger

vi. 变强

e.g.Our friendship has steadily strengthened over the years.

我们的友谊逐年增加

The wind had strengthened during the night.

风在夜里刮得更大。

strengthen the team. 增强球队。

 

15.decide on 对……作出决定

e.g.Have you decided on a date for your wedding?

你结婚的日子选好了吗?

 

16.feel like doing sth./ want to have sth. or do sth.

e.g.I felt like another glass of wine

I didn’t feel like going to work. 我不想去工作。

It feels like stones.

It was only there two days but it felt like a week.

 

17.desperate adj. 绝望的,拼命的

(willing to do anything and not caring about danger, because you are in a bad situation.)

e.g.We had no food left at all and were getting desperate.

By now I am desperate for a holiday/a new term.

渴望新学期的开始,对……急需。

I am desperate to lose my job.

急切地想失业。

I am desperate for freedom.

 

18.disappointed adj. 失望的;沮丧的

 

19.ashamed adj. 感到惭愧或羞耻的

(feel guilty because of sth. you have done.

I was ashamed of having lied to my mother.

Are you ashamed to be a Chinese?

Barry was ashamed that he had lost his temper.)

 

20.in spite of…

We went out in spite of the rain.

We know the tank could blow up but we have to take a risk.

23.prejudice n. 偏见

24.awkward adj. 局促不安的(make things embarrassed / not convenient )
