Ever since her husband went to work abroad, Mrs. Jackson has lived on her own in their big old suburban house, which was purchased by her husband about 20 years ago.

Considering her safety, her son has been trying hard to ask her to sell the house and buy a new and small one in downtown. To his disappointment, Mrs. Jackson doesn’t accept the idea. She says that she has to look after their old house, as the family tie. But recently there are often stories about someone stealing things around here.

It was a freezing day before Christmas Eve. At about four o’clock in the afternoon, Mrs. Jackson was enjoying some Christmas music when someone knocked at the door. She heard it but didn’t move. Another knock. Who might it be? Mrs. Jackson was a little afraid. She determined not to answer the door but keep waiting. Then nothing strange happened and no more knocks. She waited a few minutes. She walked quietly to the door, and listened. She heard nothing but the wind outside. She slowly unfastened the door and looked outside through the crack. She then let out a cry and threw the door wide open! She could hardly believe her eyes. At the door she saw a tall, beautiful Christmas tree! In the tree was a Christmas card with the following words:

  Merry Christmas!

A 12-year-old girl who had a slight feeling that she might be quite clever has taken a test and proved she was absolutely right.

Lydia Sebastian achieved the top score of l62 on Mensa’s Cattell III B paper, suggesting she has a higher IQ than well-known geniuses Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

The comparison doesn’t sit well with the British student, who’s currently in Year 8 at Colchester County high school, a selective girl’s grammar school in Essex, England.

“I don’t think I can be compared to such great intellectuals such as Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. They’ve achieved so much. I don’t think it’s right.” Lydia told CNN.

Lydia sat the test in her summer holidays, after raising the idea with her parents who were in favor of it after some time.

It turns out the test wasn’t that hard after all.

“I was really nervous before the test and I thought it was going to be really hard. But as I started the test, I thought it was a bit easier than l thought it was going to be,” she said.

Lydia’s not quite sure what she wants to do when she goes to university, though she’s leaning toward something “based around math, because it’s one of my favorite subjects.”

“All I’m going to do is work as hard as I can, and see where that gets me,” she said.

To put Lydia’s mark in perspective, the top adult score in the Cattell III B test, which primarily tests verbal reasoning, is 161. A top 2% score—which allows entry to Mensa, the club for those with high IQs—would be 148 or over. Lydia scored 162, placing her in the top l% of the population.

24.What can we know about Lydia from the passage?

A.She is a middle school student.

B.She is the cleverest student.

C.She thinks she is cleverer than Einstein.

D.She had thought the test was very easy.

25.According to the passage, who supported her taking the test?

A.Her teachers. B.Her classmates.

C.Her friends. D.Her parents.

26.If you want to enter Mensa, you have to ________.

A.be as clever as Lydia in the test

B.be able to attend a famous university

C.have a great interest in math

D.get at least 148 in the IQ test

27.After Lydia graduates from high school, she will ________.

A.major in math probably B.enter a club

C.never be nervous D.achieve a lot

Alibaba, Bank of China and Huawei—these are the dream employers for Chinese students, according to a new survey.

“The survey of more than 55,000 students, conducted by the research firm Universum, has found that roughly a quarter want to work for an international company, while only 9% want to work for a start-up. Five percent want to start their own business.”

The students said that work-1ife balance was the most important career goal, followed by job stability. When it comes to desirable companies, Bank of China has been named the top choice by business students for seven consecutive years, and the gigantic state-owned firm shows no signs of giving up its lead.

William Wu, the China country manager for Universum, said that banking remains an attractive industry for young Chinese. “China’s government is now emphasizing the revolution of the finance industry, which leaves the younger generation with the impression that although banking is a traditional industry, there are still a lot of development opportunities.” Wu said.

E-commerce giant Alibaba (BABA, Tech30) improved six places from 2014, ranking second among business students. Alibaba’s rise shouldn’t come as much of a surprise—the company held a record-breaking $25 billion IPO in September.

Among engineering students, Alibaba was once again a bridesmaid. Instead, Huawei—a telecoms infrastructure firm that now makes consumer products-took the top spot.

“Both of these companies are pioneers in terms of local companies going international.” said Wu. “It shows that… an international development strategy has a positive influence among Chinese young talents.” Tech companies ruled the rankings for humanities students, with Alibaba—which was ninth in 2014一landing at the top. Last year, Apple was the Number l choice of Chinese students.

28.What’s the percentage of the surveyed students who want to join a company set up recently?

A.Five percent. B.Twenty-five percent.

A.is rooted only in China

B.makes consumer products

C.goes international

New research has shown that you might not just be feeling blue, you may also be seeing it differently. A blue mood may be more than just a figure of speech. Your mood may also affect how you see the world around you, according to a new study. A team of researchers has demonstrated that sadness could have an effect on the way we see colors.

The team, led by psychology researcher Christopher Thorstenson of the University of Rochester, found that people in whom they had induced a sad mood were less accurate in identifying colors on the blue-yellow axis(轴线), compared to people who weren’t feeling sad.

“We were already deeply familiar with how often people use color terms to describe common phenomena, like mood. even when these concepts seem unrelated,” Thorstenson said in a statement. “We thought that maybe a reason these metaphors emerge was because there really was a connection between mood and identifying colors in a different way.”

Thorstenson and his team are not the first to identify a link between a depressed mood and a difference in recognition. In 2010, Emanuel Bubl and his team at Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg in Germany first demonstrated a link between decreased contrast sensitivity and depression. This was supported by a 2013 paper by Johnson Faro et al of the University of Singapore.

The team conducted two studies. In the first, 127 participants were chosen randomly to watch one of two video clips, which had been proved in previous studies to feel either sadness (a cartoon clip) or amusement (a stand-up comedy routine). They didn’t do that in a specific order.

The entire group was then tasked with identifying the colors in 48 continued color swatches. The group that had been shown the cartoon clip was measurably worse at identifying colors along the blue-yellow axis, although no difference was found along the red-green axis.

For the second study, 130 participants were randomly assigned to watch either a sad clip or a neutral one. The sadness group showed reduced ability to identify colors along the blue-yellow axis than the neutral group. Again, there was no difference along the red-green axis.

Because of this lack of difference along the red-green axis, the researchers say the difference in ability cannot be explained by lack of effort, or focus. If the subjects were badly focused, they would have performed equally badly along both color axes.

32.If one ________, the colors he sees might be different from those in others’ eyes.

A.is in a good mood B.has an eye illness

C.attends a speech D.doesn’t feel happy

33.Who were the first to find out the link between mood and identifying colours?

A.Emanuel and his team. B.Thorstenson and his team.

C.Johnson and his team. D.Thorstenson and Johnson.

34.The sadness group in the second study _______.

A.felt happy when watching the video

B.performed better than the other

C.were less able to identify some colours

D.could only identify blue and yellow

35.What does the underlined word “randomly” in the fifth paragraph mean most probably?

A.In no specific place.

B.With no specific rule.

C.In no specific confidence.

D.At no specific time.
